Feast Days
Church
of the Holy Communion is increasingly a place where parishioners
are encouraged to pay balanced attention to caring for mind, body
and spirit - to foster connections with one's self, with one's family,
with one's community and with God. And there are lots of ways to
work on that balance and to "plug in" here at Church of
the Holy Communion.
Special
Events
Let
Us Keep the Feast
A time for fellowship and signing up!
Some of the most exciting events of parish life are just
around the corner and it's going to be even bigger and better this
year! The last two Sundays in August will be "Feast Days"
at Holy Communion. These Feast Days will allow you to catch up with
friends you haven't seen during the busy months of summer, enjoy
lunch with your parish family and get plugged in to all of the exciting
opportunities this Fall at CHC. The first Feast Day will be held
on Sunday, August 22. We will have a church family feast
(buff et-style lunch) in the parish hall right after the 10:00 a.m.
service. The church will provide the main dish but we ask that you
bring a side dish or a dessert to share. The parish hall will be
set up with plenty of chairs and tables. This would be a great time
to bring a neighbor or friend to CHC for lunch and fellowship. The
second will be on Sunday, August 29 and will be a Feast of
Opportunities. The parish hall will be filled with displays, sign
up booths, and information will be available about all the amazing
ways to get involved and get connected to the full life of our parish.
Choirs, recreation, worship leadership, small groups, supper clubs,
you name it - this is the time to find out about it! Representatives
will be on hand at each area to tell you all about that ministry
opportunity and to answer any questions you may have. This would
also be a great time to bring your friends to introduce them to
life at CHC. Mark your calendars today for these two great opportunities!
Easter Egg Hunt
The
Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be on April 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.
on the front lawn of the church. Everyone is invited to this
exciting annual event of the parish. The Easter bunny always hops
by for a visit. Kids of all ages join in on the fun. The big kids
hunt for eggs on the front lawn of the church while the smaller
kids search in the Memorial Garden side lawn. Click

Thanksgiving
Day Service
Holy Communion offers a Thanksgiving Day Eucharist at 10:00 a.m.
on Thanksgiving Day. We sing traditional Thanksgiving hymns
such as Come ye thankful people, come, Now thank
we all our God, We plow the fields and scatter,
and America the Beautiful. The altar is adorned with
harvest festival decorations, and the service will be only one hour
in length. Come and give thanks for the religious freedoms we celebrate
in this land.
Advent
Festival
Our annual Advent Festival is held in Cheney Parish Hall between
the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. worship services and all Christian
Education classes are cancelled so that everyone can attend this
inter-generational event. During the festival you can make your
very own Advent wreath, enjoy a warm breakfast and do a little holiday
shopping. While youre here visit the Operation Joy Tree. Each
star on the tree will list the name and wish list of a child. Operation
Joy benefits the children of our diocesan downtown ministry, The
Emmanuel Episcopal Center. The Episcopal Book Shop usually sets
up in the parish hall and have Advent calendars, ornaments, books
and more available for purchase. CHC will also have music CDs,
green grocery bags and t-shirts for sale as well.
Christmas Pageant
On
Christmas Eve, during the 4 p.m. service, the children of the parish
participate in our annual Christmas pageant. In homemade costumes
and with the singing of Christmas carols, the story of Jesus
birth is presented in place of the sermon. The two childrens
choirs, St. Nicholas Choir and Boys and Girls Choir, offer choral
leadership. Children ages 3 9 are invited to participate
in this program. With the many visiting grandchildren and new faces
we like to have plenty of extra pageant costumes on hand so that
every child can participate.

Ministry Sundays (formerly
known as Rally Day)
What are Ministry Sundays? These days are an expansion of what
you may have known as Rally Day in the past. The parish hall is
filled with displays, sign ups, and information about all the amazing
ways to get involved and get connected to the full life of our parish.
Choirs, recreation, worship leadership, small groups, supper clubs,
you name it - this is the time to find out about it! On the two
Sundays, representatives will be on hand at each area to tell you
all about that ministry opportunity and to answer any questions
you may have.
Parish
Picnic
Each
year we have a parish picnic in the shade on the side lawn of CHC.
Everyone brings chairs and blankets and enjoys a delicious spread
of picnic food. There is live music and lawn games for kids and
adults. Click here for pictures from
our 2009 Parish Picnic.
Presiding Bishop
Visit
The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori visited Holy
Communion on Sunday,March 8. We gathered in the nave for
a Q & A style forum with the Presiding Bishop. Following the
forum, Bishop Katharine was the celebrant and preacher at our 11:15
worship service. The ECW hosted a lovely reception in Cheney Parish
Hall in the Presiding Bishop's honor.
Bishop Katharine is the twenty-sixth Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal
Church. She is chief pastor to the Episcopal Churchs 2.4 million
members in 16 countries and 110 dioceses. Some things you might
know about our Presiding Bishop are that before priesthood she was
an oceanographer. Also, she remains an active, instrument-rated
pilot a skill she applied when traveling between the congregations
of the Diocese of Nevada, where she was elected bishop in 2000.
Bishop Jefferts Schori was elected to the office of Presiding Bishop
on June 18, 2006 by vote of the 75th General Convention. This Convention
also set the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
as the Episcopal Churchs top mission priority. In her full
endorsement of these goals, Bishop Jefferts Schori calls upon Episcopalians
and the wider global community to work together for their implementation.

Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Supper
The Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, hosted by the Brotherhood
of St. Andrew, is held on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday).
Last year, The Brotherhood dispersed $1,400.00 in donations to seven
different charitable organizations in Memphis and abroad. The Annual
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is their primary fundraiser. The charitable
organizations receiving gifts in 2008 were Emmanuel Episcopal Center,
New Hope Christian Academy, The Church Health Center, The Good Shepherd
Center and Alzheimers Day Services. In addition to these Memphis
area organizations they also donated funds to Planting Faith,
a mission group teaching farmers in Africa modern farming methods,
and to our very own missionaries, Heidi and Monica. Please contact
Tommy Roberson at 683-6731 for more information.
All
Saints' Sunday
The
combined choirs of Holy Communion, Parish Choir, Motet Choir, and
Boys and Girls Choir, sang the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré
in the context of the Eucharistic liturgy this year on All Saints
Sunday. This beautiful, historic choral work was accompanied by
orchestra, organ, and harp, funded by the Friends of Music, and
was sung in memory of all those who died in our parish in 2007-2008.
The annual All Saints Shrimp Dinner also takes place that
night. We served up boiled shrimp, corn, potatoes, garlic bread,
Caesar salad and delicious homemade desserts. This is a fun event
in the life of our church and is always a sell-out.
Blessing of the
Pets
A
Blessing of the Pets ceremony is typically held on the steps of
CHC sometime near the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi on October
3. The ceremony, a joint event for CHC and St. Marys School,
is a traditional remembrance of St. Francis and his love of all
creatures. Pets of all types, (appropriately restrained, please)
including stuffed animals - or even photos of your pet - are welcome.
