CONFIRMATION
If you are a
9th grader or older, you have reached an age when you might be ready
to make a mature affirmation of your faith and commitment to God
in Christ. Or you might be thinking what in the world are you talking
about John, I already come to church every week. Confirmation at
Church of the Holy Communion is about the blending of two worlds:
the young and the not so young. Confirmation is about learning how
to be a member of a faith community by the models set by the older
members of the congregation. And that time is upon us. On May 17th,
Bishop Johnson will make his annual visit and will invite those
who have completed the confirmation program to affirm publicly their
baptismal vows and receive the laying on of hands and prayer for
the Holy Spirit. This is the sacramental rite of Confirmation. Our
program will begin on Tuesday February 17th. All eligible youth
and parents will receive letters about this process in the second
week of January but feel free to contact John Burruss with
any questions.
Confirmation
is an important sacramental rite in the Church and is a step one
can take to make a “mature public affirmation of their faith
and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism and to receive
the laying on of hands by the bishop.” (Book of Common Prayer,
page 412.) The Rt. Rev. Don Johnson, Bishop of the Diocese of West
Tennessee, visits the parish annually to preside at confirmation.
Those interested in being confirmed prepare by taking our Inquirers’
class. The class is held in the spring with the bishop’s visit
usually following in late May. Many lifelong Episcopalian’s
choose to take class to reaffirm their faith.
